HIIIIII students.
Idk if I can say « I am happy to be back » since I left my lovely Cape Town for my rainy Belgium home. Even though I complain, I was happy to see my friends and family. This end of internship also implies an end to my bachelor. From that, I finished my thesis on sustainable fashion, from which I will write an article about (maybe (if I have time (if I take the time))). ANNNND, I am starting my master next year and I will have to find a real job in a year (not stressed at all (just not having any nail lately)). Since everything is going sooo fast, I am motivated and determined to get my dream job. Which implies a burst of creativity, which is why I will try to write more articles in the upcoming months.
ANYWAY, too much talking, should I learn to shut the f* up? maybe. Do I want to? maybe not.
Today’s class is about addiction, MY addiction. Yes, being obsessed by the closet (and life) of Carrie Bradshaw is considered as a drug (by my banker). Even though low waisted jeans looks terrible on me, it has become really compulsive for me to own every single fashion item created between 1990 to 2010. This strange fascination probably comes from all the iconic 2000s movies about a girl leaving in NYC (who is most likely working for a magazine). Try me on the subject, I can cite you more than just « The Devil Wears Prada ». Anyway, if you are a huge fan of not only Carrie’s closet, but also Hannah Montana’s or even Andrea Sachs’, this lesson is for you!
First of all, if you just started your hunt for vintage and luxurious items, bags should be your first clue! They are the easiest items to look for since you do not need to try it on, it is easy to check its state as well as its authenticity AND they exist in every style! If you know me well enough, you should know how obsessed I am with my balenciaga city bag I purchased on Vinted. But I also have a lot of crushes on other big brands that ruled the fashion week back then such as Prada, Gucci and Fendi that are still in these past seasons. I have recently bought a MiuMiu bag (Vinted), for which I have already planned a surreal amount of outfits to wear with (I am probably categorized as crazy now).
Bags are easy, but clothes are something else. The good thing is that you can find every style from any brand, the bad thing is that you can find every style from any brand. The torture is to search. Luckily, I have a list of brands I always look out when I am craving vintageluxuryclothes. You can call me the « Sherlock of Vintage », since I always find THE piece I am looking for. For really classsssy stuff you can always look out for classic brands such as Hermes, Louis Vuitton or Chanel. If you are aiming for lower budget you can always go for Giorgio Armani, Tom Ford or Burberry, weirdly, their clothes are classify by the society as less luxurious. However, in my opinion, those brands gave out classical masterpieces that can last in your closet for centuries (not decades, I said CENTURIES). If you are looking for more fun and colorful pieces, I usually checked out Blumarine, Chloe or Dolce & Gabbana. And how to not mention Dior, which fits both classical and really fun styles.
Finally, if you need to be even more challenged by vintage items on second hand platforms, shoes will make you have a headache. Even though I dream of Manolo Blahnik heels every night, it is hard to find a pair that is rather not expensive and that are still in good shape (at this point, I just want to be able to walk in it). Many problems can arise from buying online SO make sure to check the size and state of the items before buying. At the end, if you found THE pair, you’ll be the happiest. A study (led by me lol) shows an increase of my overall happiness after purschasing Gucci ballerinas and Miumiu boots.
Overall, I hope you are now able to build your Carrie closet with unique garnments that will last in time (clothes made in the past are made with good materials and no chemicals, which result in a better quality, which allows the items to last longer and not harm your health).
PS: I still haven’t figured it out how to obtain vintage jewelry since it costs a liver to have it in good shape and not as rusty as a Claire’s ring under a drop of water. I’ll let you know when I found my Chanel pearl chain.
See you next class,
Fanny ;))
